Description: This research project will investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of 2 digital education modules focussed on fundamental care delivery and effective self-care for care workers. This project is supported by Flinders University, College of Nursing and Health Sciences and Oceania Healthcare.
Purpose: This project aims to explore how education modules can support the nursing and care worker workforce in New Zealand to 1) prioritise and engage in self-care and 2) deliver high-quality fundamental care. This supports better care experiences and outcomes for the growing older population.
Benefits: You will have access to two educational modules (courses) that provide information and reflective activities designed to strengthen your ability to provide person-centred fundamental care for residents and effective self-care for yourself and your colleagues. Your feedback will help identfiy how best to support staff working in residential aged care to provide person-centred fundamental care and self-care. This is aligned with Health NZ’s goals to build and retain a capable and supported aged care workforce.
Participant involvement: If you agree to participate in the research study, you will be asked to complete three online surveys over the next 2 months that will take approximately 5-10 minutes each. Pre-test and immediate post-test surveys will use the relevant tool associated with the module you have completed. The final follow-up survey (two months later) will include both the person-centred care and self-care tools, regardless of which module you completed.
Potential Risks: There are no anticipated risks for participating in this study. If you experience feelings of distress as a result of participation in this study you can contact the following services for support: • Raise employee assistance programme (EAP) at 0800 735 343 or www.raisementalhealth.co.nz.
Withdrawal Rights You may decline to take part in this research study. If you decide to take part and later change your mind, you may withdraw at any time without providing an explanation. Participation is entirely voluntary. You may withdraw at any time by closing the browser. Data submitted up to that point may still be used. Your employment status or relationship with Oceania Healthcare will not be affected by your decision to participate or withdraw.
Confidentiality and Privacy: Only the Flinders University research team will have access to your survey responses. Your name and any identifying information will not be linked to your answers. Shirley Ross and David Ku (Oceania Healthcare) may have access to names for issuing certificates of completion but will not have access to survey results. Survey data will be de-identified and stored securely. No individual results will be reported. All findings will be aggregated and anonymised. Results may be presented in publications, or presentations. Data, including identifiable, non-identifiable and de-identified datasets, will not be shared with other research groups or used in future research projects
Data Storage: All data will be stored on secure servers at Flinders University (R: drive) for at least five years after publication. Identifiable data will be de-identified for storage unless otherwise indicated. After the retention period, data will be securely destroyed. At the conclusion of the research project, all data will be securely transferred to and stored at Flinders University (R:drive) for five years after publication of the results. Following the required data storage period, all data will be securely destroyed according to university protocols. By taking part in this research, you consent to providing true and correct information and only participate once.
Study Feedback: On project completion, a short summary of the outcomes will be provided to all sites where participants were recruited for distribution via internal email to all staff.
Ethics Committee Approval: The project has been approved by Flinders University’s Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC 7576).
Queries and Concerns: Queries or concerns regarding the research can be directed to the research team.
