Big Talks for Little Sports People: Mental Health Education
Description of the study
Current research stresses the importance of social and emotional development for learner wellbeing. The Big Talks for Little People program is a framework using PEACEful Minds (Preparation, Education, Action, Coping and Evaluation) for helping schools and Educators deliver important skills to students such as communication, resilience, and conflict resolution. “Big Talks for Little People”, has a strong published evidence base showing empirically that the program develops enhanced understanding around thoughts, feeling and behaviours and can normalise the mental health and wellbeing conversation in classrooms.
The program has shown a 25% reduction of bullying incidents and improved self-reported mental health of children. Evaluations show it has positively impacted the mental health literacy of students and teachers.
The proposed new and innovative adaption of the ‘Big Talks’ program, Big Talks for Little Sports People aims to enable players to:
•access, evaluate and synthesise information to make informed choices and act to enhance and advocate for their own and others’ health, wellbeing, safety and mental health literacy
•develop and use personal, social, and cognitive skills and strategies to promote self-identity and wellbeing, and to build and manage respectful relationships
The current initiative develops the Big Talks for Little People program into a sequential mental health literacy program for use in sports clubs. The sessions include awareness talks to use during training. This project is supported by Flinders University, College of Education, Psychology and Social Work, and has been funded by the ‘Breakthrough Mental Health Foundation’, 'Beyond Bank, 'Office of Recreation Sport and Racing' and 'Little Heroes Foundation'
Purpose of the study
